08/11/2008 - AIC changes Name to IACUC

Recently the Committee voted to change its name from “Animal Investigation Committee (AIC)” to “Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).” The name AIC was chosen before IACUC became the standard name for such committees; this change will align the WSU IACUC with the terms used by other institutions. We have begun to change all the documents associated with the Committee. For now our website will remain www.aic.wayne.edu.

05/15/2008 - Reducing Paperwork!

In an effort to continue saving paper and time, the IACUC now only requires a signed original application along with one copy of the associated grant (if applicable) when Principal Investigators submit new protocols.

04/23/2008 - New Training Requirements

The Committee is using new online training modules from the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). Effective immediately, the training modules are required for all Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel prior to approval of all new protocol submissions.
Letter from Dr. Dorothy Nelson regarding the CITI program
To help you navigate through the CITI training website, the IACUC created the following documents: All the IACUC training requirements can be found on the Education/Training page.

04/01/2008 - The Guide - International Translations
(Includes Chinese)

  • As you know the IACUC follows The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide) to ensure that all animal work conducted here at WSU is in compliance with Public Health Services Policy and the requirements of our accrediting body (AAALAC). You might not know that the Guide has been translated into many languages (Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Taiwanese) and can be read online. We thought it might be helpful to provide the links for to you to share with your staff. The AIC expects all animal users to be familiar with The Guide. We hope these international translations will encourage research personnel who do not speak English as their native language to review this important document. The CHINESE translation can be found by clicking the book below.

02/22/2008 - Revised Forms and Policies for 2008

  • The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee has revised all forms, policies and SOPs for 2008. Please use the new forms for future submissions of protocols and amendments. All protocol submissions must be on the 2008 form by the April 2008 meeting (the email submission deadline for the April meeting is March 25th).
  • In an effort to continue saving paper and time, the IACUC now only requires PIs to submit a signed original and one copy of a protocol along with two copies of the associated grant (if applicable).

10/16/2007 - Revised American Veterinary Medical
Association Guidelines on Euthanasia

  • The AVMA has issued an update to the 2000 Report of the Panel on Euthanasia with a new title, AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia. Since the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals requires IACUCs to use the recommendations of the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia, OLAW has issued a notice in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts regarding implementation of the new report.
  • The NIH Guide notice is posted at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-005.html

The AVMA Guidelines on Euthanasia are posted at: http://www.avma.org/resources/euthanasia.pdf

8/13/2007 - Important IACUC Form Change
(Conflict of Interest Disclosures)

  • To comply with WSU’s Conflict of Interest(COI) Policy, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee has modified the Protocol Application as well as the Amendment Form To Add Personnel. These forms now require Conflict of Interest disclosures and original signatures for all laboratory personnel.
  • Amendments to Add Personnel need to be delivered or mailed to the IACUC Office with original signatures; unfortunately we are no longer able to accept Personnel Amendments via email. All other amendments can still be submitted electronically.

8/13/2007 - Paper-Saving Suggestion!

  • Feel free to submit the three copies of your new protocols and associated grants as double-sided copies. We do request that you continue to submit original signed protocols single-sided.
